Astrology is an ancient science that studies the patterns and the positions of the planets, stars and other celestial objects. These collective celestial bodies in astrology are commonly known as the zodiac. The zodiac is a band of 12 constellations (or a pattern of stars or star clusters) that line the path that the Sun 'appears' to trace over the course of a year in a circular orbit [even though it is the Earth that orbits the Sun]. The Moon and the planets lie within this path, which is known as the “ecliptic”; this is the plane in which most of our solar system lies.
The position of the celestial bodies, the Sun, the Moon and all the planets in the solar system at the time and place of birth can reveal an individual’s astrological blueprint. It is a map of the sky when we were born, otherwise known as a horoscope or a natal/birth chart.
In western astrology an individual's chart is made up of the main astrological divisions which are the planets, signs and houses. Each sun sign and planet has an archetypal symbolism associated with it. The planets represent our characteristics and qualities and what is going on, the signs show how it is happening, and the houses represent the different area of life these things are being played out in.
Your birth-sign or sun-sign is the sign that the Sun was located in at the time of your birth. However, there are also other very important signs. Some of these are your ascendant or rising sign, moon sign, and other relevant points in a chart.
